The Amazing Jumper

The amphipod excels in long jumps. The tiny marine organism, barely the size of a rice grain, is able to jump 40 times its own length. This is equivalent to a man jumping 240 feet.
The amphipod is able to achieve this remarkable feat because of the three pairs of well-developed legs under its tail and a muscular action which enables its body to extend forward in a straight line.
There are over 3,600 species of amphipods living in the seas and fresh waters of the world.
